13th New York Independent Artillery Battery

Alternate Designations: Baker’s Brigade Artillery.

Commander: Lt. William Wheeler (1836-June 22, 1864).

Numbers: Four Ordnance Rifles, 118 men. 8 wounded, 3 missing.

Raised: New York City as part of the Philadelphia Brigade.

Dedicated: July 4, 1893.

Location: West Howard Avenue. The monument marks the position held by Wheeler’s 13th New York Independent Battery on July 1, 1863.

Description: Westerly granite obelisk with a bronze New York State Seal on the front and text inscription. A crescent insignia is incised into the front and rear of the obelisk. There are high reliefs of upward-facing cannon barrels on the sides of the obelisk. The obelisk stands on a tiered base. Base is smooth stone on a 6.3 foot square base. Overall height is 14.8 foot. Flanking markers are one foot square with pyramidal caps.
