61st Ohio Infantry

Dedicated: September 14, 1887.

Location: The monument is located on south side of Howard Avenue. It marks the location of the 61st Ohio Infantry on the afternoon of July 1, 1863. Acting as skirmishers, the regiment engaged the enemy almost immediately, and after a “severe skirmish,” drove the Confederates westward to Oak Ridge. Afterwards, they covered the left section of Dilger’s Ohio Battery, but were obliged to retreat when Rodes massed column emerged from the woods on Oak Ridge.

Description: A Concord granite shaft stands on a pedestal and three-tiered base with scotia molding. There is a relief of crossed muskets and other Infantry accouterments on the front of the shaft.
