Location: Located on the east side of Emmitsburg Road, north of Long Lane. It is partially enclosed by a War Department board fence. Marks position 8th Ohio Infantry after 4:00PM July 2-3, 1863. Pickett and Skirmish duty until Longstreet’s assault; became advance line perpendicular to attack.
Description: A granite shaft adorned at the top with a bronze sculpture of a soldier’s cap, canteen, knapsack, and blanket roll resting on top of a drum. Each side of the shaft features carved images of a row of stars, a trefoil, and a column. Monument is a multi-part smooth and polished granite shaft topped with a bronze knapsack, drum, haversack, and cap, and set on a stepped base of which the lowest step is 5.6 foot square. The shaft contains incised and excised inscriptions. Overall height is 12.4 feet. Flanking markers are 1.2 foot square.
