Indiana State Monument

Erected summer 1970. Dedicated July 1, 1971.

Location: Spangler’s Meadow, East Confederate Avenue.

Description: Two monoliths stand on a pedestal and base, surrounded by a patio and walkway. The Indiana State Seal is incised into the lower front face, between the monoliths. Sited on flagstone walkway with two benches on North & South of monument. Monument honors soldiers from Indiana who, with the Army of the Potomac, participated in the Gettysburg campaign. It marks the site of the charge of the 27th Indiana Infantry on the morning on July 3, 1863. The 27th Indiana was one of seven regiments from that state at Gettysburg. The Indiana Monument Commission chose a design submitted by a Gettysburg memorial company and the monument was erected in the Spangler Meadow in the fall of 1970. The memorial cost $17,000.00 and weighs in at 28,000 pounds.
