Location: West of Sykes Avenue on Northwest slopes of Little Round Top. The Regiment dug in here and erected stone breastworks and remained here throughout Battle. Meade observed Battle from this position for a time on July 3, 1863.
Description: Monument consists of a rectangular block with ridged cap and carved mini ball cornice, decorated with bronze New York State Seal on the front; and Maltese Cross on the back. Dedicated in late 1888 or 1898, it marks the location held by the 146th Infantry unit on the 2nd of July 1863. Overall height is 8.4 foot. Flanking markers are flat topped with inscription on the top, one foot square.
Fox notes: “General Hayes, its last brigade commander, in taking leave of the regiment wrote,–that “associated for a long time with the infantry of the Regular Army, the infantry of the Regular Army, the One Hundred and Forty-sixth yields the palm to none.””
