Commander: Brig. Gen. James J. Pettigrew (July 4, 1828 – July 17, 1863). He went by his first name of Johnston. A distinguished academic from North Carolina, he was wounded on July 3, and mortally wounded on July 14, 1863, at Falling Waters, in command of the ANV’s rear guard.
