Pender’s Division
One of three divisions in Hill’s Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia.
Commander: Maj. Gen. William D. Pender (February 6, 1834 – July 18, 1863). He went by his middle name of Dorsey. He was a professional soldier, USMA 1854. Pender was wounded by a thigh fragment on the afternoon of July 2; he died from a ruptured artery on July 18. Pender was the highest ranking Confederate officer fatality in the Gettysburg Campaign.
