Christ Lutheran Church

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church,  located at 30 Chambersburg Street, is the oldest structure in Gettysburg that has been continuously used as a Church. Founded in 1835, it was intended to be the English speaking version of the Lutheran Church for the Gettysburg Community (St. James Lutheran Church conducted services in German).

This church was one of the first hospitals established during the Battle of Gettysburg. Both of the trees that stood in front of the Christ Lutheran Church were “witness trees” and were planted circa 1830 to 1840; they needed to eventually be removed because they reached the end of their lives. The monument to Chaplain Howell of the 90th Pennsylvania, the only chaplain killed at Gettysburg, is located on the steps in front of the church.

This is a supplemental site on the Adams County Field Hospital tour.
