Confederate Avenue Observation Tower

Also known as: Tower Number Two; The Warfield Ridge Tower; The Longstreet Tower.

Fabricator: Variety Iron Works, Cleveland, Ohio

Designer: Col. Emmor B. Cope.

Height: 75 Feet.

One of five towers built in 1895 and 1896 by the War Department. Located on West Confederate Avenue just south of the intersection with the Millerstown/Pumping Station Road. The second of five towers built by the War Department (towers 1-4 were built in 1895 and tower #5 was built in 1896). Tower #1 was 60 feet tall and was located on Big Round Top and was dismantled in the 1960s.

In it’s annual report, the Gettysburg National Military Park Commission described the towers as: “These are all solid and well-built structures, and located as they are, they afford the observer a complete and satisfactory view of the entire scene of the great battle and enable him to get a consistent and accurate idea of it as a whole.”
