Crawford Farm

The John S. Crawford farm is located near a ford with Marsh Creek. This farm was used as a field hospital for Semmes’ and Barksdale’s brigades of McLaws’ Division. Over 43 soldiers were buried on the property. The surgeon in charge of the hospital was Francis William Patterson, of the 17th Mississippi.

John Crawford was a Gettysburg attorney. At the time of the battle, a black tenant farmer and veterinarian, Basil Biggs, was living on the property. Biggs later assisted in reburying the Union dead from the battle.
