Dobbin House

The Alexander Dobbin House is located at 89 Steinwehr Avenue (the Emmitsburg Road) and today operates as a restaurant and tavern.

The Dobbin Tavern was established in 1776, making it the oldest still standing structure in the town limits of Gettysburg. It was built as a home for Irish-born Reverend Alexander Dobbin and his large family (he had ten children from his first wife and an additional nine from the widow he married!). The building may have been a first stop on the Underground Railroad north of the Mason–Dixon line. During and after the battle, the house served as a temporary field hospital. The historic house appears virtually the same as it did over 200 years ago.
