Johnson’s (Virginia) Battery

Location: West Confederate Avenue, opposite Schultz Woods. Located on the east side of West Confederate Avenue, South of Fairfield Road and opposite Shultz Woods.

Cast iron tablet, 3’8″ x 3’4″, with raised inscription painted in a contrasting color and mounted on fluted cast iron post. Tablets casts by Calvin Gilbert. The inscription on the 3.8′ x 3.4′ tablet narrates the events associated with Battery during the Battle.

July 2. In position here and actively engaged under the heavy fire of Union sharpshooters and artillery.

July 3. Remained in this position all day and actively engaged.

July 4. Withdrew in the night to Marsh Creek on the Fairfield Road.
