Kingel Farm
A small farm of 15-acres on the east side of the Emmitsburg Road, fighting swirled around the Kingel Farm as the Confederates broke the Third Corps advanced line.
Daniel Klingel, a shoemarker, bought this farm in April 1863. He was living at it with his two children when the War arrived on his doorstep. The house was used as Confederate field hospital on July 1; on July 2, Daniel and his family fled on the advice of Union officers. He returned on July 4 to a bullet riddled house stripped of its possessions and with his animals driven away or killed.
This property passed through multiple hands and eventually made its way into the NPS’s ownership.
