Nixon Mortally Wounded Marker
Dedicated: 2023.
Location: Fairview Avenue.
Description: Small bronze marker in front of the house at current day 730 Fairview Avenue in the Colt Park subdivision. Fairview Avenue, located near the current Gettysburg Hospital, follows Smith’s Ridge which saw skirmishes on the first and second days of the battle. The marker was erected by the home’s owner, Rick Bilz, and it marks the approximate location where Pvt. George Nixon of the 73rd Ohio was mortally wounded. Nixon later died at the 11th Corps Hospital at the Spangler farm.
Inscription reads:
“On or near this spot, Pvt. George Nixon 73rd Ohio Infty Great Grandfather of former President Richard Nixon was mortally wounded on July 2, 1863. He died on July 10, 1863 and is buried in the National Cemetery.”
