The Monuments and Memorials of the Gettysburg Campaign
Sachs Covered Bridge
A Town truss bridge, the Sachs Covered Bridge is a 100-foot span over Marsh Creek in Adams County, Pennsylvania. It was constructed in 1854 by David S. Stoner and both armies used it during the Gettysburg Campaign. On July 1, 1863, the bridge was crossed by the two brigades of Reynolds’ I Corps of the heading towards Gettysburg. A few days later, on July 5, the majority of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia retreated over the bridge.
For many years, the bridge carried vehicular traffic, but it was closed to vehicles on May 7, 1968. On June 19, 1996, a flash flood knocked the bridge off its base and a considerable distance down Marsh Creek. It was recovered and rebuilt; it was rededicated on July 21, 1997.
