Sherfy Farm
Located about a mile south of Gettysburg on the west side of the Emmitsburg Road, Reverend Joseph Sherfy’s peach orchard became one of the battle’s most famous sites. At the time of the battle, Sherfy and his wife Mary, both pacifists, were living here with their six children. They handed out water and bread to the I Corps, and fled on the advice of Union troops on July 2, returning on July 6 to find their farm destroyed and littered with dead animals and men. The barn was burned; inside were the remains of soldiers who could not escape the conflagration.
The Sherfys remained in Gettysburg and rebuilt. The farm eventually passed into the hands of the NPS and features the original house and a rebuilt barn.
