Slyder Farm

Located about half a mile from the Emmitsburg Road at the foot of Big Round Top, this 75-acre farm had been home to John and Catherine Slyder (sister to Lydia Leister, who’s farm became General Meade’s headquarters) and three of their children since 1849. The farm included a two-story stone house, a double-log barn, summer kitchen, and other buildings. Two months after the battle, the Slyder family moved to southwestern Ohio and their farm was eventually owned by the Snyder family. It is today owned by the National Park Service and accessible by walking down the lane from the Bushman Farm.

During the battle, the Slyder Farm (also sometimes called Granite Farm) was probably used as an aid station. At least five Confederate soldiers were buried on the property, most notably Colonel John A. Jones of the 20th Georgia.
